Mission and Program Description:

The Care and Development of Young Children program prepares individuals for various levels of employment in child care centers, nursery schools, recreation centers, public school settings, head start programs, or other areas where caring for young children is the principal function. This program focuses on cognitive, physical, emotional, and social growth and development. Developmentally appropriate play activities, curriculum, nutrition, guidance, health/safety, children with special needs, and approaches for teaching as suggested by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) are included.

Length of Program:

AAS = 75 Semester Credit Hours
TD = 60 Semester Credit Hours

Education Requirements:

AAS = High School Diploma or GED
TD = Ability to Benefit

Note:  Transferable General Education Courses needed to meet the requirements for the AAS are offered through a collaborative agreement with South Louisiana Community College (SLCC).

The objectives of the Care & Development of Young Children program are to provide knowledge and training to:

  • Enable students to recognize and meet the developmental needs of children from birth to age five
  • Enable students to identify characteristics of a safe and healthy environment for children and adults,
  • Enable students to organize and implement daily activities for a developmentally appropriate early childhood setting
  • Enable students to identify the administrative and management tasks and procedures to establish and maintain an early childhood program
  • Enable students to use appropriate guidance techniques to promote positive behavior in all children in the early childhood setting
  • Enable students to gain job seeking skills necessary for employment in the field.
  • Provide AAS degree seeking students with appropriate General Education knowledge and skills in English, Math, Speech, Psychology, and Physical Science.

COST

An application or re-application fee and a testing fee per component are charged for each Application for Admission submitted.

Tuition is paid by the semester. (SEE - Tuition and Fees) Students are also required to purchase books and supplies separately. Contact your host campus for a complete projected cost of this program.

The college accepts cash, personal and company checks, MasterCard or Visa for all fees. A percentage of tuition and fees are refundable up to the tenth day of instruction. No refund will be made after the tenth day.
