First Aid - General

FIRST AIDFirst aid is defined by the American National Red Cross as “the immediate and temporary care given a victim of an accident or sudden illness until the services of a physician can be obtained.” First Aid is required whenever an injury occurs and should be limited to doing what is necessary to preserve life. The primary concern is the care of the injured person and prevention of additional injury to that person. In an emergency, an employee not only has the legal right to administer first aid, but would in all probability be considered negligent in duty if he or she did not attempt to act for the benefit of the injured person. However, employees should not attempt treatment beyond first aid under any circumstances. Emergency medical care can be obtained by simply dialing 911 and should be posted or accessible in all work areas. Emergency medical services take less than five (5) minutes to respond and/or emergency services are within such distance. When available, the names of CPR/First Aid responders may be posted in close proximity to the work area. If a student is injured, the employee will immediately initiate necessary first aid.
